Animated Line Chart Video Export
Framechart creates animated line charts from CSV data, rendered on the GPU directly inside DaVinci Resolve. The line draws progressively from left to right, revealing data over time. Point the effect at a CSV, select your time/label and value columns, choose a template and animation pace, and the chart renders live in your timeline.
The free DaVinci Resolve plugin includes every feature — all chart types, full GPU quality, rendering at your timeline resolution (4K and beyond), transparent in-timeline compositing, and commercial use — with a small watermark. A $19/month license simply removes the watermark.
Best Use Cases for Line Charts
Line charts are the right choice when your data is continuous and the trend — not the individual values — is the story. Common use cases:
- › Stock price trends: Daily, weekly, or monthly close prices over a time range. The progressive draw animation creates natural suspense as the price history reveals.
- › Interest rate history: Central bank rate decisions plotted over years. Clear trend changes are immediately readable in line format.
- › Inflation over time: CPI or inflation index data — the gradual slope of the line communicates the magnitude of change more effectively than bar chart.
- › Revenue growth: Monthly or quarterly revenue for a company or product. Line chart shows compound growth curves cleanly.
- › Continuous data time series: Any dataset where each row represents a sequential point in time and the connection between points is meaningful.
Line Chart vs Bar Chart
The choice between line and bar chart is primarily about whether your data is continuous or discrete.
Use Line Chart When
- ✓ Data points are connected over time
- ✓ The trend or slope is the insight
- ✓ Data is sequential (dates, months, years)
- ✓ You have 10+ data points
Use Bar Chart When
- ✓ Comparing discrete values or categories
- ✓ Rankings matter (which item is largest)
- ✓ Data points are independent, not sequential
- ✓ You have fewer than 10 items to compare
Animation Styles
Framechart line charts animate with a progressive draw — the line extends from left to right, tracing the data path as the animation plays. All four animation paces are available for line charts:
Even, consistent speed across the full line draw. Clean and professional — best for finance and business content.
Starts slow, accelerates through the middle, finishes with a sharp reveal. Maximizes suspense on the final value.
Fast overall with a quick deceleration at the end. High energy — well suited to social media clips.
Elastic ease-in-out with a slight overshoot at each data point. More playful — works for consumer-facing content.

Tips for Time Series Data
Framechart accepts a variety of date and label formats in the X axis column. The value column must be numeric (no currency symbols, no commas in numbers).
Accepted Date Formats
YYYY-MM-DDISO date (2024-01-15) — recommended for precisionMonth YYYYMonth Year (January 2024, Jan 2024) — good for monthly dataPlain textAny label (Q1 2024, Week 1) — used when exact dates are not needed
Recommended CSV Structure
Keep label names short — they display on the X axis and long labels overlap at higher data point counts.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I create an animated line chart from CSV?
Drop the framechart Line effect onto a clip in DaVinci Resolve, point it at your CSV file, choose the X axis column (dates or labels) and Y axis column (numeric values) in the Inspector, and set animation pace. The line draws progressively from left to right as the chart renders live in your timeline.
Can I export a line chart with transparent background?
Yes. The chart renders with a transparent background directly in your Resolve timeline. For Premiere Pro or After Effects, render it in Resolve as ProRes 4444 with Export Alpha enabled and import that file.
What data works best for animated line charts?
Continuous data with a clear progression over time: stock prices, economic indicators, revenue trends, temperature records. For discrete comparisons (best company revenue this year), use bar chart instead.
How long should an animated line chart video be?
For YouTube: 8-15 seconds for a chart segment embedded in a larger video. For standalone chart clips: 5-20 seconds. In DaVinci Resolve, the chart spans your timeline clip, so duration follows your edit.
Can I create a line chart race animation?
Yes — Line Chart Race is its own chart type in framechart. Point it at a long-format CSV (one row per entity per time step) and the lines draw forward live, with a scrolling axis, as the data animates over time.
