Create Animated Data Charts Without After Effects

Framechart creates animated bar charts, line charts, and data tables from CSV data without After Effects. Upload a spreadsheet, pick a template, and export an MP4 or transparent PNG sequence in 10-15 minutes. No Adobe subscription, no keyframing, no scripting. Works in any browser on Windows, Mac, and Linux.

For data chart animation specifically — the segment of video production where editors spend hours in After Effects importing numbers and keyframing bar heights — Framechart automates the entire process.

The Workflow

  1. 1
Export CSV from Google Sheets or Excel

File → Download → CSV in Google Sheets, or File → Save As → CSV in Excel. Your chart data needs a label/date column and at least one numeric value column.

  2. 2
Add the framechart effect and select chart type

Drop the framechart effect onto a clip in DaVinci Resolve, point it at the CSV, select bar chart, line chart, or data table. Map your columns in the Inspector.

  3. 3
    Choose template and animation settings

Select cinematic dark (full bloom and glow) or clean (for compositing over footage). Set animation pace. In DaVinci Resolve the chart spans your clip, so duration follows your timeline.

  4. 4
    Render live in your timeline

The chart renders live in your Resolve timeline. For Premiere Pro, render as ProRes 4444 with Export Alpha enabled and import that file for compositing over footage.

Where After Effects Is Still Better

Framechart is purpose-built for CSV data chart animation. It does not attempt to replace After Effects for everything. AE remains the better choice for:

  • Fully custom animation sequences built from scratch — Framechart has a fixed set of chart types and animation styles
  • Title cards, lower thirds, and text animations not driven by data
  • Non-data motion graphics: logos, transitions, particles, abstract visuals
  • Complex compositing with multiple video layers, masks, and effects chains
  • Any animation work that does not start from a CSV file

If your workflow is a mix — data chart segments plus custom motion graphics — use both. Export the chart from Framechart, import into your AE project, and layer it with AE elements.

Where Framechart Is Faster

For CSV-driven data chart animation specifically, Framechart automates what takes 2-4 hours in After Effects:

After Effects Process

  • 1. Import and format data (CSV/Excel plugin or manual)
  • 2. Build bar/line chart layer structure
  • 3. Keyframe each bar height or line point
  • 4. Add labels, easing, effects
  • 5. Render and export
  • 2-4 hours per chart

Framechart Process

  • 1. Upload CSV
  • 2. Select chart type and columns
  • 3. Choose template and pace
  • 4. Renders live in your timeline
  • 10-15 minutes per chart

For DaVinci Resolve Users

DaVinci Resolve users without Adobe subscriptions have historically had no good option for animated chart creation. Resolve's Fusion module can technically do data charts, but the setup time is comparable to After Effects and requires scripting knowledge.

Framechart is built specifically for this workflow. Export a transparent PNG sequence, download the ZIP, extract it, and import into Resolve as an image sequence clip. The chart composites over footage with full alpha channel — no AE license, no Fusion scripting.

Transparent Background Without After Effects

The primary reason video editors needed After Effects for data chart animation was transparent background export. AE can render video with an alpha channel (ProRes 4444, DNxHR with alpha) — most other tools cannot.

framechart renders with a real alpha channel directly in the DaVinci Resolve timeline — the same compositing result without the AE subscription or any import step. For other NLEs (Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro), deliver a ProRes 4444 file with alpha from Resolve.

After Effects pricing as of July 2026. framechart is free, or $19/month (or a one-time $99) to remove the watermark.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I create professional animated charts without After Effects?

Yes. framechart creates animated bar charts, line charts, and data tables from CSV data with native GPU rendering quality, directly in your DaVinci Resolve timeline — visually indistinguishable from After Effects output for data chart use cases.

Does framechart work on DaVinci Resolve without After Effects?

Yes. This is a primary use case — framechart is a native DaVinci Resolve plugin: the chart renders live in your timeline with a transparent background, no import step. No After Effects required at any step.

Is framechart cheaper than After Effects?

framechart is free with a small watermark, or $19/month (or a one-time $99) to remove it. After Effects costs $54.99/month as a standalone subscription (or as part of Creative Cloud). For chart animation specifically, framechart is both less expensive and significantly faster.

What After Effects features does framechart NOT replace?

Framechart is purpose-built for CSV-driven data chart animation only. It does not replace After Effects for: custom motion graphics, text animations, video compositing effects, particle systems, or any non-data animation work.

How does the quality compare to After Effects charts?

framechart's render engine uses native GPU rendering (wgpu) with bloom and motion blur effects. For animated data charts from CSV, the visual output is comparable to AE — especially with the cinematic dark template. After Effects offers more customization potential, but framechart produces professional results without AE expertise.
